Ingredients

  • 2 pounds potatoes thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg optional
  • 1 cup grated cheese like cheddar or Gruyère
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme optional

Instructions

Prepare the Potatoes

  • Wash and peel the potatoes. Slice them very thin using a knife or slicer. Try to keep slices even. This helps them cook at the same speed and makes the dish creamy and smooth.

Make the Cream Mixture

  • In a saucepan, add cream, milk, butter, and garlic. Heat gently on medium heat. Do not boil. Stir slowly until butter melts. Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg for extra flavor.

Layer the Potatoes

  • Grease your baking dish lightly. Place one layer of potato slices at the bottom. Pour some cream mixture over it. Sprinkle a little cheese. Repeat layers until everything is used.

Cover and Bake

  • Cover the dish with foil. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F). Let it cook for about 45 minutes. This helps the potatoes become soft and absorb the cream.

Add Final Cheese Layer

  • Remove the foil carefully. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. This will create a golden crust. It also adds a rich flavor to the dish.

Bake Until Golden

  • Bake uncovered for another 25–30 minutes. The top should look golden and bubbly. Insert a fork to check if potatoes are soft and cooked through.

Rest Before Serving

  • Take the dish out of the oven. Let it rest for 10 minutes. This helps the sauce thicken. Serve warm and enjoy every creamy bite.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for even slices
  • Add onions between layers for extra flavor
  • Try different cheeses like mozzarella or parmesan
  • Add cooked bacon for a smoky taste
  • Use sweet potatoes for a healthy twist
  • Do not skip resting time after baking
  • Use fresh herbs for better aroma
